Question about meth abuse and recovery?

Question: Question about meth abuse and recovery?

(Posted by: CK on 2008-04-17 13:21:58)

I used meth everyday for over a year. I stopped cold turkey just before I got married and have been clean for 3 years. Ever since I stopped using the drug I feel like I never really got back to my old self again. Things that I used to love doing don't interest me anymore and it takes a lot to make me happy and I am easily irritated and not as layed back as i used to be. It has gotten a lot better over the years but I am still not my old self yet. My wife thinks that I may have a mild case of depression. Could this be true? If it is would getting put on anti- depressants help with my situation or will it just get better over time. Thanks in advance for your answeres. Thanks for your answers ladies. Would I go to my normal Doctor or should I see a phsycologist?

Well, there is a reason why you turned to drugs and stayed on them. You have all the symptoms of depression. Now this could be caused by your thyroid (Meth can damage many organs and glands), or a chemical imbalance. In either case, your doctor can perscribe the correct meds... and within 5 weeks you should be feeling like your old self.

Good for you for stopping. The post recovery symptoms have come back because those things that are bothering you are what led you to seek a mind altering drug in the first place. Now that the drug is gone, the symptoms are back. So now you have to find a healthy way to get rid of the symptoms. Questions: 1) have you been tested for add 2) have your been evaluated for depression or anxiety 3)have you used behavioral therapy (counseling) All of these things need to be done to help you to figure out what you can do to alleviate these problems. Medications are often used, and there are some really good ones that help so much. Check out this book it has helped me to understand alot more about a family members mental health.

I think u should see both a psych & a doc caus the long term effects will affect u both ways. That meth reshapes your brain! Particularly the regions pertaining 2 your personality!

After three years you have recovered from the dopamine levels in your brain. You need to find things that interest you. SSRI's take away your sexual drive, benzo's don't help depression, only make you feel drunk. Anti-psychotic medication, and mood stabilizers just pack on the pounds. Don't mess with psychiatric medication, and keep up with your recovery.
